An open boat roomy , light, sturdy, seawo rthy, with a range of elegible engine to make sure your wallet won’t sink purchasing it. These are my goals in developing this plan for homebuilders, a planing open boat of 6,50 m , a boat suited to daysailing, diving and sport fishing.
Powerplant: single engine outboard max 115 HP , or double outboard max 2 x 70 HP.
Performances: we expect the boat will reach about 33 knots with the most powerful single engine, 100% fuel and 4 person onboard (at about 1400 kg of displacement) , and a very good 26 knots with a cheap and fuel-saving 60 HP engine and the same 4 persons on board.
The Hull: I developed this plan around a hull that can be build from plywood sheets and epoxy; I spent a lot of time in calculations to optimize deadrise angle and hull design , looking for a good compromise between deep V hull, that behaves greatly even in rough seas but requires a powerful engine to reach good top speeds, and a moderate V hull , which requires a less powerful engines but pays somehow a toll when seas become rougher. All this in a plan that has to be suited for a plywood and epoxy construction by an homebuilder.
A lot of room: 9 square meters of cockpit are really a huge amount of space, that you can employ to fish, set yourself for a dive with your friends, or simply take a sunbath away from the crowd.
How to build her: the hull is in marine oukume plywood and solid wood battens notched on plywood bulkheads, all glued with epoxy resin, chines are reinforced with glass tapes epoxy laminated. The construction will start setting up the plywood bulkheads on a cheap wood scaffold; we’ll proceed to link the bulkheads with stringers and keel backbone, gluing all together with thickened epoxy, thus making a sturdy and light structural grid. The planking will be made with plywood panels glued on the stringers and bulkheads; chines between panels will be stiffened with glass tapes both inside and outside, the same thing will be done among bulkheads and panels; deck and cockpit will follow the same scheme, plywood panels glued with epoxy on a grid of bulkhead and stringers. The hull will behave like a composite monocoque, light, strong and stiff.
The boat can be customized with all the accessories that you need: fishing rod holders, a T-top central steering position, additional seats, a diving equipment rack, and so on.
