A lifejacket is a personal protective equipment (PPE). When worn and used properly, it contributes to increase the chances of survival of a man overboard. When choosing a lifejacket, particular attention must be paid to :
 
- Legal requirements, to be considered both countrywise and related to the type of activity (offshore cruising, regatta racing, seashore leisure activities, professional missions..)
- Practice environment and conditions (type of vessel, frequent use, dirty environment, sitting position...) which determine the most important features : comfort, flexibility, buoyancy, durability.
- Size and stature (adult, child, short stature or large body build) and the clothes worn in conjunction with the lifejacket (coastal seawear or heavy protection gear…)
- And of course your own preference !
