Somehow a slightly smaller sister of our sailboat Petrel 28, but with a bit more of sporty attitude , Hirundo (scientific name for swift) can be described as this.

But there’s something more in this small plywood & epoxy sailboat plans taylored on homebuilder’s needs.

Starting from hull lines of Petrel we work on Hirundo to slightly enhance performances downwind and reaching, with flatter transom lines, giving her a protected cockpit comfortable for 4 people, and a good balance between interiors volumes and cockpit area.

Hirundo is trailerable, with her 2.5 meters of maximum beam and lifting keel; she can be considered on the heavy edge of a trailerable sailboat, but this feature may help homebuilders to keep down costs in expensive and crowded marinas, choosing where and when launch the sailboat.

Hull is a sturdy plywood – solid wood and epoxy construction, perfectly explained in building plans; drawings are full of details and suited for beginners to intermediate homebuilders.

Sailplan is available in two versions on plans: regatta or cruise, with the first one featuring a taller rig and a longer bowsprit to rig a large gennaker, and the second ones leading to a more manageable sailboat in windy areas; mast is deck stepped with one set of spreaders and backstay.

Keel is retractable, made by welded steel plates to form a NACA airfoil with a low drag profiled lead bulb bolted on the fin tip; keel case can be made on GRP using the fin directly as a mold, then fitted and laminated on the hull. Detailed drawings are on plan.

Hirundo features a simple and reliable solid wood transom hung rudder , leaving all the room available in the cockpit; a really interesting feature: a box-shaped locker for the liferaft is fitted on the transom , closed by a hatch, so that liferaft can be stored in a real useful position.

Engine can be a 5-10 HP outboard fitted on the transom or an inboard small diesel engine (drawing on plans upon request), in this case pay attention if you want to trailer your sailboat.

Interiors are quite roomy for 7,50 meters sailboat, the innovative plywood panels cabin design allowed us to have a very good inner volume and ceiling, with a double V berth , a double berth under the cockpit and a separate toilet right down on the left the companionway hatch; maximum height is a really good 1.72 m in the galley.

A fixed keel version can be requested.

Second option: upon request from a builder I added a second interiors layout , with a full size galley berth, moving the toilet forward, a more roomy after berth; drop me an email if you need further informations about this option.

Idea 19

IDEA 19 originates in 2005 as a modification of Dudley Dix’s TLC 19, a small GRP trailerable sailboat; at the end of the work the only things left from the original project were hull lines, every other aspect of the project was refined, boosted up, and modernized and the plans were converted to a modern wood-plywood and epoxy building system.
